What Is a DE Safety Razor?

de safety razor

As outlined above, a safety razor is intended to provide you with the closeness of a straight razor while reducing the risk of harmful cuts and bleeding. A safety razor is generally made of two or three pieces. The two-piece style is often called a butterfly style because it flips open and outward like wings. The typical three-piece safety razor has a top and middle piece into which a double-sided (DE) safety razor blade fits securely. There are generally three pegs on the safety razor, a center and two on the side for stability.

A DE safety razor blade has a razor-sharp edge on each side. This allows you to take a few strokes with one side of the razor, then turn it and take a few more with the other side before rinsing. Single strokes separated by rinsing action may suit your skin and razor better, so do whatever works best. When using a traditional safety razor, we recommend choosing one with a hefty handle. The weight of the handle is generally all that you need to get a perfectly close shave with your safety razor, and pressing down too hard can cause cuts. When the handle is too light, the need to press can cause those cuts.

Safety Razor Aggressiveness

As mentioned briefly above, using a DE safety razor provides a shave as close as a straight razor without nearly the risk of deep cuts. There is however, as with any razor, the risk of minor cuts and nicks, and this razor design tends to cause the least damage when used correctly.

Make sure that your DE safety razor is securely fitted into your two- or three-piece handle, butterfly style or otherwise. Some DE safety razor bodies have an adjustable screw that allows you to adjust the closeness of your shave; this is also called the aggressiveness setting. At first, set it to moderate, which works great with most DE safety razor bodies and blades.

Safety Razor Techniques

Once you've selected a razor body/handle and set the adjustability, you should wash your face well with warm water to open pores and soften your skin. Fill the sink with warm water, or fill a cup on the side, and leave it there. Whether you use a traditional shave brush and lather soap or cream from a dispenser, thoroughly coat your face with shaving cream for lubrication so the blade moves smoothly over your face without hanging up and cutting you. We like to shave right after a shower to ensure that our pores are open and beard hair is moist.

Having applied your shaving cream of choice, it is now time to shave. With a DE safety razor blade unit, it is best to take short strokes, one or two on each side of the razor, and then rinse it in the warm water you prepared to free the blade of hairs. This frequent rinsing should help you maintain clean, effective razor strokes. Shave with the grain, pulling the skin tight with your free hand to optimize the smoothness while minimizing the risk of cuts.

Note that everyone's face has hair growing in different directions, so learn your own face and adapt your shaving to its contours. In time your shaves get smoother, they cause less irritation, and you rarely if ever suffer cuts or nicks.

The final step in using your DE safety razor is the rinse and after-shave application. Rinse with cold, not warm, water so that the hair and cream is removed from your face and your pores close naturally. This helps to reduce the redness that can occur following a shave.

Finally, apply the aftershave product of your choice. To avoid stinging, go with an after shave that does not include alcohol. Witch hazel is one common replacement for alcohol, and mint or eucalyptus always adds a nice cooling sensation. The aftershave will reduce redness and bring your skin back to smooth and normal in no time at all, helping you make the most of your shave.

Product Specs

A DE safety razor is a double-edged razor blade designed to be easily loaded into a safety razor body. As mentioned above, safety razor bodies come in a variety of designs, with the DE safety razor blade options having holes to fit the various bodies they are designed to fill. DE safety razor blades are one answer to the fad of disposable razor blades. Instead of buying cheap, plastic disposable razors that cause skin irritation and fill up landfills, you can purchase a safety razor body that can last a lifetime and then fill it with fresh DE safety razor blades whenever needed. This is a better investment, and it results in better shaves.

Generally speaking, DE safety razor blades are made of stainless steel, and they may have a wide variety of different coatings applied. Some brands use a ceramic tungsten/polymer coating that results in an extremely sharp blade. Other makers apply a platinum-plus/PTFE coating that adds smoothness to our shave, as do chromium-ceramic-PTFE coatings. Some of the world's best DE razor blades have a premium-class platinum coating that adds to the level of comfort of your shave. Whatever the coating, it is important to load it into a safety razor handle your are comfortable using and practicing with.

Pricing

The pricing of DE safety razor blades is substantially less than the cost for disposable razor cartridges like those offered by Gillette and a host of other shaving-industry giants. While a pack of 3 razor cartridges for a Mach 3 by Gillette might cost you up to $20 at the corner store, a 50-pack of Derby extra DE safety razor blades runs around $5. That's 10 cents per blade compared to up to over $6 per cartridge.

Cartridges become dull and dirty over time, while the safety razor is rinsed with each use back to near-new condition. Best of all, you can replace your DE safety razor blade as often as you like, depending upon your preference for sharpness, without the guilt that comes with overspending and waste.

Conclusion

The options available in terms of DE safety razor blades on the market are many, and the four brands we evaluateddemonstratesome of the key variations in the DE safety razor blade market. One important decision you must make involves the purchase of your safety razor body. Do you want a butterfly, a 2-piece, or a 3-piece design? The 3-piece is the easiest style to clean, but it takes a few more minutes than a 2-piece to change out your DE safety razor blade. The butterfly design is push-button easy and may be the fit for you.

Final Verdict: 5 Stars

DE Safety razor blades are an economical investment. They cost a tiny fraction of what disposable razor blades and cartridges cost to use frequently. Plus, the use of DE safety razor blades and razors is more environmentally friendly given the waste associated with using disposable razors. Safety razors provide a close shave without the repetition of old blades scraping over your skin causing irritation and redness.

High-quality DE safety razor blades cost around a dime each and present a smooth shave with lesser irritation, so the only true question is: What safety razor body best suits your style, and what kind of shaving cream feels best on your face?
