Just think how much money and hassle you can save by not needing to buy replacement razors or razor blades every couple of weeks. Those things are not cheap.
It is not just the money saved that will make you happy you made the change though. There a whole bunch of advantages to the straight razor, including quality of shave, closeness of shave, and feeling like a man.
Let me take a second to help you visualize what I’m talking about.
I used to have a Gillette Mach 3, before that a Wilkson Sword Proctector 3D. Despite the Mach 3 appearing to be a superior shave, it never really did the job properly either. All too fast the blade seemed like it was getting dull, in need of replacing, and before I knew it, that tiny 4 cartridge pack was finished.
I would go to the supermarket or drug-store to buy some more and think:
“What? It costs that much just for 4 blades?”
Then a newer “sharper” blade comes out and soon your blades are harder to find, almost forcing you to upgrade. Guess what, the blades still got blunt quickly and after 4 or 5 shaves it didn’t matter whether they were Mach 3 or Mach 7. They still never really do the job.
But hey, they are convenient and much safer/easier to use than Straight Razors or the Safety Razors they evolved into. Right?
Actually, that is not strictly true.
When I decided to try out Straight Razors, it was more because I was curios to see if they were any good. I had a romantic image of myself shaving like James Bond or my Grandpa and everybody in the world somehow knowing about it and respecting me for it. (Hey, I built a whole website about it!)
I expected to cut myself all over the place (there were some cuts) and to have to spend an hour on the whole process. Boy was I surprised.
Yes it took a bit of practice, and there were the occasional cuts, as well as some added time to the process of shaving, but the results are well worth it. My skin feels smoooooth.
The first time you shave with a properly sharpened straight razor, you will suddenly realize “oh wow, skin can be that smooth?” Seriously.
It doesn’t really take that long to get the hang of either, and the added concentration required means that you go into a sort of zen-like state and the whole process ends up being very meditative. Shaving is now one of my favorite pastimes (I’m a simple guy really) and I cannot believe how badly we were all suckered into thinking that modern disposable blades were ever the way to go.
I guess when something appears more convenient, it is easy to make the switch in the first place. Unfortunately somewhere along the way we forgot what a smooth shave should really be like.
Where To Buy Straight Razors
You can buy almost anything online, you should know that. Still, it is not a simple case of popping over to Amazon and selecting the first one you see, there are some real low quality blades on the market. Head over to my products section to see a selection of good blades for a variety of prices. Remember a straight razor is for life, so consider making a solid investment.
